We've tried not to make too many decisions about the co-op before we've met people interested in helping us set it up because we want everyone to be involved in making those choices. So, "The Door in the Wall" isn't (yet?) the formal, official name of the co-op, but we needed something to call it in the meanwhile while we continue building the founding group.

The name comes from an H. G. Wells short story in which a boy finds a door in a wall and goes through it to find a joyous and fun paradise. As he grows up, the door appears again several times, but he doesn't go through it because life gets in the way.

We'd like our house to be a community hub, full of joy and fun (although, ideally, unlike the story, there'd be no panthers here). It would be somewhere that allows people to keep the innocence and adventures of youth, rather than being forced to "grow up".

There are visual similarities too: in the story, the door is described as green in a white wall; our house has a green front door, and the rest of the house is white. We don't have any front garden, so the front of the house feels like a wall along the pavement.

The name also has a simple Welsh translation ("Y Drws yn y Wal"), as we'd like to be as bilingual a house as possible (dw i'n dysgu Cymraeg yn araf).

We remain open to other options, but, for now, our nascent co-op is "The Door in the Wall".
